The pros and cons of Long Distance Running
Like most forms of cardio, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Nothing is good at its most extreme, but moderate levels can definitely help one's life improve. Today we'll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of long distance running.

Mentality
When it comes to fitness, most of us spend more time making excuses NOT to do something than we do doing it. It is fantastic when a person can develop the habit of going outside or on the treadmill for a 20-minute run a couple of times per week. Aside from the health benefits, you've overcome a mental hurdle by developing a new habit, establishing consistency, and demonstrating to yourself that you can still be uncomfortable and overcome it. It has also been shown to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Cardiovascular Health
A lot of things improve physiologically. From increased mitochondrial density to improved aerobic capacity and heart health. Running adds longevity to your life and a higher quality of life as you age.
-
Cheap
It doesn't get any cheaper than this, in my opinion. It's absolutely free! All you need is a pair of shoes to go running anywhere. There's no need for a gym membership, a workout partner, or any special equipment. It's the simplest to begin with. While I strongly advise you to use proper form, this isn't the most technical sport out there. You can literally get up and go without much instruction.

Weight loss
Of course, there are the weight loss benefits. Running burns calories, and it has helped many people lose weight. While you don't want to overdo it, incorporating small amounts of running into your routine will get you out of your sedentary routine of sitting at a desk, driving, sitting at home, and sitting everywhere! Move those hips!

Joint Injuries
The issue with running TOO MUCH is the mileage. Consider our automobiles. The engine, the tires, and every other component can only go so far before needing to be replaced or repaired. Our bodies are far more complex, but also far less replaceable. There is only one set of bones available. Hips, knees, legs, and back can only withstand so much strain. Do you really want to put 1,000 miles on our car before we're 30? What, for a marathon? The most serious issue for even elite marathon runners is that they must take MONTHS off after races due to the chronic impact.

Weak Immune System
Running a lot of miles is still stressful. Cortisol levels rise in response to chronic stress. Cortisol is excellent at mobilizing carbs for fuel during a run, but if it is not returned to normal levels afterward, it will impair your immune system's ability to function. If you run for 90 minutes or more every day and don't recover or eat the right foods, you risk lowering your immune system's optimal function.
